About Us

Neighborhood Notes offers community-focused news like no other source. We start conversations that encourage participation, action and collaboration. With thoughtful and investigative reporting, we are committed to bringing the stories that are often overlooked, but that matter to the people who call Portland home. We care because this is our city, too, and we strive to be a resource that fosters communication and connections across all 95 of Portland’s diverse neighborhoods.

Ken Aaron

Ken Aaron is co-founder and photo editor of Neighborhood Notes. When he removes the camera from his face, Ken enjoys biking and hiking in and around Portland, tasting the amazing food in town, sampling the variety of bourbon-based drinks our fabulous bartenders dream up, and keeping tabs on the Ducks, SF Giants and 49ers. Sometimes, just for fun, he goes out and takes more photos.

Kyle Curtis

Kyle Curtis received his MPA in sustainable food policy from Portland State University's Hatfield School of Government in 2010. Kyle has helped manage the Montavilla Farmers Market in southeast Portland, served on the steering committee of the Multnomah Food Initiative, and was recently appointed to the Portland-Multnomah Food Policy council. Kyle is interested in how food access and equity issues interact with to develop a strong economy and build healthy communities. Kyle lives in a small house in Montavilla with his wife, two small daughters, and an apple tree that covers the backyard each summer.

Lynnette Fusilier

Lynnette is the founding editor of Neighborhood Notes. When she's not chained to her desk, Lynnette enjoys biking around the city, following Mack Brown Texas Football (Hook 'em Horns!) and sipping bourbon at a variety of neighborhood establishments. And, lest you think she's a tomboy, Lynnette also enjoys that fresh from the salon hair flip, batting her lashes and eating copious amounts of chocolate.

Justin Houk

Justin Houk was born and raised in Bend, Oregon but left the sun to immerse himself in Portland. He has written blog posts for the tech blogs ReadWriteWeb and ProgrammableWeb. He loves meeting with other writers and connecting with readers over fine coffee.

Cassandra Koslen

Cassandra Koslen is a freelance writer, copy editor and proofreader enamored of good food and quality literature. Hailing from the east coast, she enjoys many things about Portland and its culture, not the least of which being the edibles and long summer nights. In addition to reporting for a variety of small publications in town, including Street Roots and the NW Examiner, which she also copyedits and proofreads monthly, Cassandra also keeps a food and culture blog entitled Whisk Until Frothy.

Extra-literary experience mostly consists of over a decade of food service employment, from waiting tables to working as a fishmonger. Currently she supplements her income slinging charcuterie and carrying catering trays.

Karen Locke

Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Karen is a freelance writer living in the Vernon neighborhood of NE Portland. Before calling Bridgetown home, she spent a five-year stint in Minneapolis, where she was published in Minnesota Parent magazine and the Southwest Journal. Karen has been published in MIX magazine, Willamette Week and Portland Pulp.

Jeffrey Lynott

Jeffrey Lynott is a Bay Area transplant who has staked roots in the Foster-Powell neighborhood with his wife and black lab. After several years in Portland, he now considers it home, but not without keeping his beloved San Francisco Giants near and dear to his heart. Because he can't write about his favorite baseball team, he's gone with the next best thing: Portland, and the neighborhoods that make it great. Jeff earns his paycheck as a social worker, but occupies most of his time deep in thought about, again, his Giants, as well as where he and his wife can retire within the next five years on a social worker's pension. Jeff enjoys the outdoors, coffee, brunch, and spending time with his family and friends. And if he can find the time, he also writes for the Foster-Powell blog.

Bill McDonald

Bill McDonald is a Portland musician who makes a living writing freelance comedy for radio and television. Locally, he's had a column in the Portland Tribune and was the co-host of the legendary "Born to Slack" cable access show with the late great James Shibley. He's had scripts optioned by Hollywood, and has made one film himself. He's also written a book currently called, "William of Arabia" about growing up in the Middle East.

Jon Mitchell

Jon is a news writer at ReadWriteWeb. In his spare moments, he blogs for Burning Man. He was the managing editor of Neighborhood Notes from January 2011 to January 2012. He's still around helping out with content strategy and site development, but he doesn't have a title anymore. Jon lives in the Kerns area in one of those sweet, old buildings that probably used to be a hotel in the 1920s.

You can find out more about Jon or contact him at jonmitchell.me.

Éva Pelczer

Éva Pelczer is a roving freelance writer and food enthusiast with a background in editorial work, publicity design, and the restaurant industry, notably tending bar. After a year on the road and three in New York City, she's back in Portland. And when she's not writing, researching, or designing ad campaigns, you'll find her behind the stick, where she'll be serving your Negronis up and your martinis dirty. Interests include old maps, new ideas, and having a drink at your favorite neighborhood dive.

Anna Reed

Anna Reed lives in a quaint apartment in SW Portland where she can see the Fremont bridge from the front porch. She is inspired by her heroine of fiction, Jo March, her family, and the many blogs she reads daily. In her free time, Anna enjoys shopping for vintage jewelry, drinking coffee, and reading, then cutting up fashion magazines.

Chad Walsh

A flatlander hailing from the mitten state’s meaty palm, Chad Walsh finally crossed the Mississippi in 2004 and exiled himself to the remote mountains of Idaho before permanently settling in the City of Roses. Prior to moving to Portland, Chad was a journalist, a photojournalist, a managing editor, a cultural editor, a copy editor, a copywriter and a creator of jingles and scripts. He’s been an impresario, a master of ceremonies, knows how to operate a jackhammer—and he possesses a rather enviable reserve of colorful knee socks.
